TOYOTA CROWN LANDSCAPE IS AN OFF-ROADING EXECUTIVE SEDAN WITH RUGGED STYLE

  • Toyota Crown Crossover Landscape special edition arrives in Japan.
  • Off-road-biased model features increased ride height and all-terrain tires.
  • Subtle body upgrades include additional fog lamps and body cladding.

Last year, Toyota executives promised more Crown special editions and hinted at an off-road-biased variant. The Japanese automaker has made good on that promise with the new Crown Crossover Landscape, a peculiar luxury sedan with increased ground clearance and a more rugged persona.

For a start, the Crown has been jacked up by 0.98 inches, allowing it to traverse challenging terrain with greater ease. Aside from that, the 18-inch wheels are wrapped in chunky 245/60 all-terrain tires, which should help the Crown when it is scrabbling for grip on loose surfaces.

Other adventure-inspired accessories include bright red mudflaps (with the Crown insignia) and chunky matte black fender moldings, which Toyota says have been hand-painted. Round back, you’ll find additional fog lamps and a tow hitch capable of hauling 1,653 lbs.

Exclusive Paint

Besides the above, the Crown Crossover Landscape benefits from Urban Khaki paint with black exterior accents. This is a new color which is exclusive to the adventure sedan. Rounding out the aesthetic changes are (optional) dealer-installed roof racks that support up to 88 lbs. Inside, the Landscape has the same dashboard as the regular Crown, barring several minor differences. Toyota has chosen a ‘Black Raster’ hue for the color scheme, while the dashboard features laser engraving that reads “Landscape Crown,” just in case occupants forget what sort of car they’re traveling in.

The Crown lineup is expanding with the addition of a rather distinctive family member.

Aside from that, it’s business as usual. Under the hood, the Landscape is powered by a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine that channels 340 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels. That should make it fun to drive on gravel roads, but don’t expect to tackle mountain trails - a 4Runner it is not.

More Special Editions Are On The Way

As for pricing, the Landscape retails for ¥6,850,000, which is around $45,200. That’s not a bad deal, considering the local Crown lineup starts at $40,350. Toyota Crown fans may want to act fast, as the automaker has said the limited edition will only be in production until December 2024. Between now and then, we expect more Crown special editions to be revealed - but don’t be surprised if they’re limited to the Japanese market.

What else can we expect? Perhaps the rumored GR Crown will make an appearance alongside a production-ready version of the convertible concept. Crown chief engineer Ryutaro Shimizu said last year that there are more than 100 ideas for special editions. That means anything is possible, but we’d settle for a svelte-looking Crown sports coupe.
